Calvin Liu is a Chinese Canadian cinematographer and documentary filmmaker based in Montréal. A graduate of the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema, his directorial debut short film, Motel Grand-Pré, won the Canadian Society of Cinematographers Award for Best Canadian Cinematography (Short Film) and the Air Canada Short Film Award at the Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival in 2025.
He is a two-time nominee for the Canadian Society of Cinematographers Awards (2024 & 2025) and the recipient of La Bourse de la Relève from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television (2025). His distinctions also include the Jean-François Bourassa Award for Outstanding Cinematography (2023) and the Spark Project at the 2023 Nanlite International Competition.
Calvin’s work is defined by a balance of raw realism and poetic abstraction, blending documentary intimacy with a highly composed visual aesthetic. He collaborates closely with directors and creative teams to craft images that are both emotionally and visually resonant. He is currently in post-production on his debut feature documentary, Yang Yang.
